Newborn Babies and Infants

 

As we all realise there are significant forces generated on a baby during the birth, whatever form it takes. There are unique aspects to the anatomy of full term (and premature) infants.

 

Yes we are designed for the rigours of this process but there are many variables that can create a mechanical threat to the human spine.

 

The relative immaturity of the infant, will manifest the effects of these threats in a unique way, differently to how an adult conveys symptoms when something is wrong.

 

By using specific skills spinal abnormalities can detected. Perhaps a more unique aspect of an infant is that because of existence on primitive or instinctive reflexes. These reflexes which are mediated by the nervous system can be used as a way of confirming assessment of what is wrong.

 

It is important to understand that the history as related by parents and extended family is vital in working out if chiropractic is a health care that is suited to a child of any age.

 

It does take on a different significance for the new born. Obviously for the older infant the benchmarking of milestones of development are also very useful and are related to neurological development.
